Astyanax paranae Eigenmann, 1914 (Characiformes: Characidae) in the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil: diet composition and variation Neotropical Ichthyology
Abelha,Milza Celi Fedatto; Goulart,Erivelto; Kashiwaqui,Elaine Antoniassi Luiz; Silva,Marlene Rodrigues da.
Aspects of the feeding ecology of a small characin, Astyanax paranae, were studied during 1996/1997 and 1998/1999 in the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil (25º01'50.0'' S; 050º03'41.9'' W). Fishes were quarterly captured from the reservoir's riverine and lacustrine zones and stomachs contents of 711 adult individuals were analyzed by volumetric method. Species' feeding spectrum and spatial, temporal and sexual variations on diet were evaluated. Data matrix was summarized by detrented correspondence analysis (DCA) and the axes scores from DCA were used as variables in one-way ANOVA of null models to test diet variations. Astyanax paranae fed on detritus/sediment, plant matter, algae and aquatic and terrestrial invertebrates. The time-space prevalence of...

Ecomorphological patterns of the fish assemblage in a tropical floodplain: effects of trophic, spatial and phylogenetic structures Neotropical Ichthyology
Oliveira,Edson Fontes; Goulart,Erivelto; Breda,Luciani; Minte-Vera,Carolina Viviana; Paiva,Luiz Ricardo de Souza; Vismara,Melina Rizzato.
Ecomorphological patterns of the fish assemblage from the upper Paraná River floodplain, Brazil, were described and evaluated according to trophic (guilds), spatial (habitats) and phylogenetic (taxonomic distances) structures. The samples were obtained through the Long Term Research Project (LTER-CNPq/UEM/NUPELIA) in August and October 2001. Thirty-five species were analyzed from thirty-one morphological variables. Strong significant correlations (Mantel test) between morphology and trophic guilds and between morphology and taxonomy were found, while morphology and habitat revealed a weak correlation. However, the partial Mantel test showed that the correlations between morphology and trophic guilds persist even when the effect of taxonomy is discounted....

Ecomorphology and use of food resources: inter- and intraspecific relationships of fish fauna associated with macrophyte stands Neotropical Ichthyology
Prado,Aline V. R.; Goulart,Erivelto; Pagotto,João P. A..
ABSTRACT Based on the form-function interaction and its consequence to niche exploitation by fish species, the study aimed to identify ecomorphological patterns and to investigate the possibility of explaining the trophic niche breadth using the pattern of intraspecific ecomorphological diversity. We tested the following hypotheses: i) the morphology explains variations in diet among fish species; ii) the intraspecific ecomorphological diversity is related to the breadth of the trophic niche explored by the species, so that species that feed on a wider range of resources have greater variation in body shape compared to those specialized in resource consumption. Fish were collected in stands of the aquatic macrophytes Eichhornia azurea and Eichhornia...

Environmental assessment in tropical streams by using abundance-biomass curves and W index in fish assemblages Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mise,Fábio T.; Message,Hugo J.; Pagotto,João P. A.; Goulart,Erivelto.
ABSTRACT We investigated the fish fauna response to different environmental conditions of urban (three) and rural (seven) streams through biomass/abundance curves and W index of environmental stress. Negative values of W indicate some level of stress, while positive values suggest environments with lower stress. Dissolved oxygen, marginal erosion (both left and right margins), mesohabitat diversity, and percentage of canopy cover were measured to characterize the 10 streams analysed around Maringá city, Southern Brazil. Fish were sampled by electrofishing, then identified and weighed. Results showed negative values of W to the urban streams and positive to the rural. Urban streams showed a tendency to have assemblages of fish with lower biomass and greater...

Intraspecific ecomorphological variations in Poecilia reticulata (Actinopterygii, Cyprinodontiformes): comparing populations of distinct environments Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Mise,Fábio T.; Souza,Fagner de; Pagotto,João P. A.; Goulart,Erivelto.
ABSTRACT Morphological variations, according to the principles of ecomorphology, can be related to different aspects of the organism way of life, such as occupation of habitats and feeding behavior. The present study sought to examine the intraspecific variation in two populations of Poecilia reticulata Peters, 1859, that occur in two types of environments, a lotic (Maringá Stream) and a lentic (Jaboti Lake). Due to a marked sexual dimorphism, males and females were analyzed separately. Thus, the proposed hypotheses were that the populations that occur in distinct environments present morphological differences. The morphological variables were obtained using morphometric measurements and the ecomorphological indexes. The data were summarized in a Principal...

Population structure, condition and diet of Oligosarcus paranensis (Menezes & Gery, 1983) (Osteichthyes: Characidae) at two reservoirs in South Brazil Biota Neotropica
Abelha,Milza Celi Fedatto; Kashiwaqui,Elaine Antoniassi Luiz; Goulart,Erivelto.
This study investigated the population parameters, condition and diet of Oligosarcus paranensis at Fiú and Mourão Reservoirs, located in Paraná State, Brazil. The fishes were collected quarterly between 1996/1997 and 1998/1999 using gillnets. Food items were quantified by volumetric method. The specimens at Fiú showed comparatively smaller length and worse condition. Sex ratio was statistically equal to 1:1 at Mourão, whereas there was a significant predominance of males at Fiú. Sex ratio also varied among size classes. Allometric growth prevailed among the studied groups. The diet consisted mainly of fishes and was complemented with invertebrates and plant matter in both reservoirs. There was a change in the feeding pattern as the standard length...

Population structure, condition factor and reproductive period of Astyanax paranae (Eigenmann, 1914) (Osteichthyes: Characidae) in a small and old Brazilian Reservoir BABT
Abelha,Milza Celi Fedatto; Goulart,Erivelto.
The population structure, condition and reproductive period of Astyanax paranae adult individuals inhabiting a small reservoir were investigated. The fishes were quarterly captured from the riverine and lacustrine zones of the Alagados Reservoir, Paraná, Brazil, during 1996/1997 and 1998/1999. The sex ratio differed from 1:1 with the predominance of the females in all standard length classes and total population sample. The females showed higher condition than the males. Both the sexes presented lower mean condition values in April and higher mean condition values in July. The estimated values of the regression coefficient indicated isometric growth for the females and males. The gonadosomatic relationship reached a maximum value of 14.80% for the females...

Relationships between morphology, diet and spatial distribution: testing the effects of intra and interspecific morphological variations on the patterns of resource use in two Neotropical Cichlids Neotropical Ichthyology
Sampaio,Ana Lúcia A.; Pagotto,João Paulo A.; Goulart,Erivelto.
Considering th e morphology, diet and spatial distribution of Satanoperca pappaterraand Crenicichla britskii (Perciformes: Cichlidae) in the Upper Paraná River floodplain (Brazil), the following questions were investigated: (1) Could the body shape predict the use of trophic resources and habitat by C. britskiiand S. pappaterra? (2) Could the relationship between morphology and use of trophic resources and habitat be also extended to the intraspecific scale? (3) What are the most important morphological traits used to predict the variation on diet and habitat occupation within and between species? We hypothesized that intra and interspecific differences in morphological patterns imply in different forms of resource exploitation and that the...

The coexistence of endemic species of Astyanax(Teleostei: Characidae) is propitiated by ecomorphological and trophic variations Biota Neotropica
Mise,Fabio Teruo; Fugi,Rosemara; Pagotto,João Paulo Alves; Goulart,Erivelto.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate factors that may favor the coexistence of three endemic species of Astyanax (Astyanax bifasciatus,Astyanax minor and Astyanax gymnodontus) in Segredo Reservoir (Iguaçu River, Paraná State, Brazil), and to test the hypothesis that these species share food resources, being the dietary variations related to morphological characteristics. Fish were collected at three samplings sites in 1993 and 1994, during the first year after the filling phase of the reservoir. The diet was assessed using stomach content analysis and ecomorphology by ecomorphological indices. Diet and ecomorphology data were ordinated by multivariate techniques (DCA and PCA, respectively), aiming to characterize trophic guilds and identify...
